Elim Beach

On the way to Elim Beach you go through Hope Vale Aboriginal Community. They have an Arts and Cultural Centre which is worth a visit.

Eddie’s Camp

Just over an 1 hour drive north of Cooktown via Hope Vale and towards Cape Bedford. And then you are Elim Beach.

It’s a small idyllic piece of paradise right on the water’s edge. And just a stone’s throw from the incredible coloured sands. While you’re there check out Cape Bedford.

It has 50 unpowered campsites.

The beach, for years, has been a special camping place for the Hope Vale community. The late Eddie Deemal,a Thiithaarr-warra Elder, started the camp to share his beautiful country. Eddie’s son Ivan runs the camp.

Bookings are required, you can no longer just rock up – do be early for a prime spot. Please remember that alcohol limits do apply.

Waterfalls

The Cape is full of waterfalls. But the Cooktown Region has 3 worth visiting…

Trevathan Falls

The beautiful Trevathan Falls is close to Cooktown. Drive 19km back along the Mulligan Highway and take the Mount Amos Rd for another 10km. Look for the handwritten sign pointing the way to the falls track. A 4WD is required to get to the top carpark.

Endeavour Falls

A 31km drive along the Endeavour Valley Road brings you to the Endeavour Tourist Park. From there you can take the walking track leading to the falls.

Isabella Falls

41km from Cooktown and 15 minutes on from Endeavour Falls are the Isabella Falls. Follow Battlecamp Road to get to the Falls.

To "The Tip"

To get to ‘The Tip’ you have 2 choices.

You can take the 80km run along the Mulligan Highway to Lakeland. And drive along the Peninsular Development Road (PDR),

Or you can take the more interesting 75 km unsealed Battlecamp Road. This road will take you to the Old Laura Homestead.

From the Homestead you can drive about 20kms in to Laura and join the PDR.

Or take the 165 km Lakefield road (unsealed) through Lakefield National Park. This track joins PDR at Musgrave. This is also the track to access Cape Melville.
